The New York University wrestling team wrapped up the New York State Championships in Binghamton, NY, on Sunday, January 23. NYU returns home with two wrestlers having earned All-State accolades.
In team scoring, NYU finished tied for 13th with a score of 26.5. Binghamton University finished in first with 149.5 points.
NYU's top finisher was Matt Magill (165), who placed fourth. Entering the day in the semifinals, Magill was pinned in 0:44 by Justin Lister of Binghamton, a Division I All-American last year. Magill rebounded with a strong performance in his next match, beating Troy Ireland of Niagara 8-1. That win put him in the consolation match for third place. The third-place match was a back-and-forth battle, but Magill ultimately fell to Justin James of SUNY Brockport by a score of 5-3.
“In the first match, Magill tried to flip the kid over early and got tangled up,” said assistant coach Corey Luce. “That put him in a bad position early and as a result he got pinned. He came back strong in his next match against the kid from Niagara, who isranked #3 in JUCO (National Junior College Athletic Association). And the last match could have went either way. Overall, Matt wrestled tough and had a great tournament.”
NYU's other top finisher was Sabino Galassi (184), who took home sixth place.
Continuing his strong performance from Day One, when he strung together three straight victories after a hard-fought first-round loss to the #1 seed, Galassi started Day Two with an 8-0 victory over Paul Ciaramella of Niagara. However, he fell in two tough matches that followed.
“Overall, Sam wrestled a tough tournament,” said Luce. “He has the potential to be a top-tier wrestler because he's really that tough, and he knows that. But, sometimes the Division I label of some of his opponents gets into his head a bit. Once he gets over that he is going to have some impressive results.”
Magill is now a three-time New York State Champion. This is the second time that Galassi has earned All-State honors.
“From an individual standpoint, it's nice to come home with two guys who made All-State,” said Luce. “It was a little disappointing to finish in 13th for team scoring, but we didn't enter wrestlers in 125, 149 or heavyweight, so that definitely made a difference.”
The wrestlers return to the mat next Friday, January 28, when they travel to Ewing, NJ, to participate in the Metro New England Duals.
