Box Score

The New York University women's basketball team dropped to 2-2 in the University Athletic Association (UAA) with an 80-54 loss to defending National Champion Washington University on Friday, January 21, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

The Bears (12-3, 3-1), who entered the game ranked #9 in Division III by D3hoops.com and #11 by USA Today/ESPN, earned their eighth straight victory in the series (dating back to a meeting in the 2006-07 NCAA Final Four) behind a pair of big first-half runs.

The score was tied 18-18 when Washington rattled off nine straight points, including back-to-back buckets from Kristin Anda. Maggie Ely stopped the spurt with a three-pointer for the Violets (8-7, 2-2), and Cara Bonito followed with a pair of free throws to cut the deficit back to down to four.

After that, though, the Bears went off, shooting 6-for-9 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line to outscore NYU 16-7 over the final 5:26 of the period and take a 43-30 lead into the break. For the half, Washington shot 48.6% (17-for-35), while the Violets scored at just a 34.4% (11-for-32) clip.

It was more of the same in the second half, as the Bears used an 11-0 run early in the period to put the game well out of reach. Washington led by at least 20 points for the final 12:00 minutes of regulation as it again shot lights out in the second period (51.7%).

In addition to owning a large advantage shooting the basketball (50.0% to 32.8% for the game), Washington also owned the glass, outrebounding the Violets 44-30. It was just the fourth time NYU had been outrebounded this season.

Ely led all scorers with 17 points. Bianca Storts had 10 points and Bonito added nine.

Anda led the Bears with 14 points and six rebounds. Jordan Rettig netted 11 points and Kathryn Berger had 10.

The Violets return to action on Sunday when they host 16th-ranked University of Chicago at Coles Sports Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
