The New York University wrestling team produced a third-place finish at the Washington and Lee University Invitational in Lexington, VA, on Saturday, January 15.

NYU totaled 59 points and placed behind Washington & Jefferson University (79.5 points) and The Apprentice School (75.5 points).

Spearheading the NYU effort was 165-pounder Matt Magill, who won three bouts to capture the weight class. He recorded a technical fall and a fall before recording a 1-0 decision over David Dibenedetto in the final.

"It was quite a performance by Matt considering he was wrestling with one hand (due to a thumb injury)," said NYU assistant coach Corey Luce.  "Even more impressive is the fact that  the guy he beat in the final beat last year's National Champion (Vincent Renaut) earlier this season."

Steve Massey (197) and Steven Contino (133) placed second in their respective weight classes, while Clement Bommier (141) and Dan Gorman (157) were third-place finishers.

"Overall, this was a good tournament to use as a prep for next week's New York State Championships," Luce added.

Indeed, the wrestlers return to the mat next Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 22-23, when they compete at the NYS Championships at Binghamton University.
