NYU Beats Farmingdale State on Serra Tumay's Second-Half Goal

Serra Tumay's goal was her team-leading fourth of the season.

In its final contest before beginning University Athletic Association (UAA) play, the New York University women's soccer team knocked off three-time defending Skyline Conference champion Farmingdale State College 1-0 on Sunday, September 26, at Lubetkin Field in Newark, NJ.

Serra Tumay netted the game winner in the 65th minute, taking a feed from Laura Palumbo at the edge of the box and lofting a shot over the keeper's outstretched hands. The sophomore's goal gave the Violets (4-5-1) their fourth win as many years against a Rams (7-2) squad that has reached the NCAA Tournament each of the last three seasons.

“They are a strong side with some very good, physical players,” said NYU head coach Werner T. Dasbach. “That was a great win for us going into UAA games.”

Not long after scoring the eventual winner, Tumay appeared to expand NYU's lead to 2-0. In the 80th minute. She took a nearly identical shot that the keeper got her hands on and knocked into the underside of the crossbar. The ball appeared to cross the goal line but was ruled no goal by the refs.

That lost opportunity nearly came back to haunt the Violets, but goalkeeper Rachael Ross and defender Cáit Kilpatrick made a pair of big saves with fewer than eight minutes remaining. With Corine Magee open inside the box, Ross charged and made a save with her feet. On the ensuing rebound and with the keeper out, Kilpatrick stopped Melissia Elie's attempt with her body to preserve the Violets' second straight shutout.

Ross finished with a season-high five saves between the pipes.

“It was great that we got another shutout,” commented Dasbach. “We got the goal we needed and debatably had a second. The girls battled hard all day.”

Despite being outshot 14-7, NYU produced more quality chances and forced many long-range shots from Farmingdale State. Just 33 seconds into the second half, Tumay came within inches of scoring, taking a pass from Leslie Smith in the box and narrowly missing the low left corner.

Just a few minutes before Tumay finally broke through, Rebecca Assing also produced a great chance, heading an Emily Jenkinson corner that was blocked by a Ram defender. Jenkinson also nearly scored with the Violets already leading, aiming for the far-right top corner and just missing.

But even without an insurance goal NYU held on to improve to 3-0 at home.

The Violets will look to keep that streak going when they open UAA play by hosting co-defending league champion University of Rochester on Saturday, October 2, at the College of Staten Island. Game time is set for 11:00 am.
