Having already led the New York University women’s soccer program to three winning seasons since his debut in 2007, including berths in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Metro Tournament each year, Werner T. Dasbach enters his fourth season as the Violets’ head coach.

Dasbach’s team experienced an up-and-down 2009 season, but planted the seeds to future success as several underclassmen enjoyed strong campaigns. Though they were winless in University Athletic Association (UAA) play (0-6-1), the Violets were competitive in nearly every match with five of their losses coming by one goal, including two in overtime.

The squad produced a 10-9-1 overall record last season and advanced to the ECAC Metro Tournament Championship Game after defeating Bard College 1-0 in the semifinals. The Violets suffered a 2-1 overtime loss to William Paterson University in the final.

Several of Dasbach’s players were recognized for their outstanding seasons in ’09, as junior Emily Jenkinson received Second Team All-UAA honors while juniors Katie Gaston, Filiz Kipcakli, and sophomore Erica Jones earned Honorable Mention accolades. Kipcakli also earned National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III Third Team All-East Region honors

In 2008, the team went 11-9-1 and made its second consecutive postseason appearance for the first time since 2001-02. The Violets went 2-5-0 in UAA competition, but recorded a thrilling 2-1 double-overtime victory over then-#10 ranked University of Rochester on Oct. 11. In the postseason, NYU advanced to the ECAC Metro Tournament Championship Game before falling to Stevens Institute of Technology 1-0.

Five of Dasbach’s student-athletes earned UAA All-Association honors in 2008, including First Team honoree Sarah Pillemer, who was eventually tabbed to the NSCAA/addidas Third Team All-New York Region squad – the Violets’ first All-Region honoree since 2002. The senior became the program’s all-time leader in points scored (61) and tied for the all-time lead in goals (25).

Meanwhile, the quartet of Gaston, Kipcakli, Laura Palumbo, and Jones received Honorable Mention All-UAA notice.

This followed up an exciting first season for Dasbach, as he piloted the Violets to an 11-9-1 record and to their first winning season and playoff appearance since 2002. After taking over the program, he quickly proceeded to help NYU produce its best start ever, going 10-0-1 while posting a shutout streak of 503:26. The 2007 campaign ended with an appearance in the ECAC Metro Tournament, the team’s first postseason bid since NYU reached the Sweet 16 of the 2002 NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Championship.

Dasbach, who came to Washington Square after a distinguished nine-year career as an assistant women’s soccer coach at Columbia University, was named the 2006 NSCAA/adidas College Assistant Coach of the Year – Eastern Region. During his tenure at Columbia, Dasbach’s responsibilities included recruiting, planning practices and strength training, as well as development of community outreach and program fundraising. Dasbach’s efforts helped the Lions win two ECAC Championships (1998, 2004) and an Ivy League title (2006).

Prior to his time at Columbia, Dasbach was the men’s assistant at Berry College from 1993-96 and the interim women’s assistant coach in the spring of 1996.

In 2003, Dasbach founded the Harlem Soccer Foundation, a non-profit organization that helps children enrich their lives and communities through soccer. He also designed the curriculum for the Harlem Soccer After School Program, which is designed to reach children in various New York City public and private schools in uptown Manhattan, as well as in Harlem and Washington Heights.

A 1993 graduate of George Washington University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in international affairs, Dasbach was a four-year member of the Colonials’ soccer team. A two-time captain and Atlantic 10 All-Conference midfielder, Dasbach was part of the 1989 squad that reached the NCAA Sweet 16.

Following his graduation, Dasbach played professionally for three years in the United Soccer Leagues (USL) and was captain of the 1995 Southeast Regional Champion Chattanooga Express.
