Box Score
In a physical game that featured 29 fouls and nine cards, the New York University men's soccer team fell 2-0 to Manhattanville College on Saturday night, September 25, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.
The loss snapped the Violets' (4-2-1) unbeaten streak at five games and was their first to the Valiants (4-2) since 1995 – a stretch of 10 games.
Manhattanville took the lead in the 28th minute in spite of a fantastic save by goalkeeper
Matt Stieve. The senior stopped a point-blank shot by Daniel Carlryd, but Carlryd was able to knock in the ensuing rebound to make it a 1-0 game.
The Valiants expanded their lead in the 63rd minute off a de facto corner kick. After an NYU foul near the corner, Keston George sent a free kick into the box that was headed in by Emil Sjoberg.
Just several minutes earlier
Paolo Luciano nearly made it a 1-1 game on a spectacular play. The sophomore picked up the ball in the midfield and played a long ball down the field past his defender and to himself. After regaining possession, Luciano fired a shot from the top of the box to the low left corner that keeper Jason Torres just got fingertips on.
With the Violets trailing 2-0,
Nick Coulson made a big defensive play to keep NYU in it and later nearly found the back of the net. After the ball bounced past the Violet back line, Carlryd was alone on a breakaway when Coulson chased him down from behind and won the ball.
Coulson eventually moved from defender to forward with NYU fighting to get back into the game and nearly scored. With just 11:24 to play he ripped a shot from several yards outside the box to the low left corner, but Torres again dove to make the save and keep the Violets off the board.
Stieve made four saves in defeat. For the game NYU had six corners to Manhattanville's two but was outshot 9-5.
The Violets return to action on Monday when they travel to Randall's Island to face Hunter College. Game time is scheduled for 5:00 pm.
