The New York University women's soccer team battled back from a two-goal deficit, but ultimately fell 2-1 against Kean University on a neutral field at the Stevens Tech Engineering Cup in Hoboken, NJ, on Saturday.
The Violets' lone goal came in the 53rd minute off a corner kick. Senior Emily Jenkinson played the corner into the box, where it was headed by freshman Natalie Beach. Beach's initial shot was saved, but she knocked the rebound into the back of the net for her first collegiate goal.
“Jenkinson delivered a great corner and Natalie did all she could to punch it in,” said NYU head coach Werner T. Dasbach.
Early in the first half, the unbeaten Cougars (4-0-1) did all they could to try bury NYU (1-4). Caitlin Carey netted a goal off a corner in the eighth minute to make it 1-0, then Carly Seidel put a free kick from 30 yards out into the upper left corner to expand the lead.
The Violets twice hit iron in the first half as they fought to come back. Senior Rebecca Assing struck a left-footed shot that hit the post in the 30th minute. Four minutes later, Jenkinson fired a shot that hit the crossbar.
NYU continued pressing in the second half, outshooting Kean 10-4 in the period and 19-11 for the game. But, after Beach's goal the Violets couldn't come up with the equalizer despite controlling the pace of play.
“We had a very strong second half, and we just missed two goals in the first half by an inch or two,” commented Dasbach. “The soccer gods weren't with us. It was a tough result considering the effort was there.”
NYU returns to action tomorrow at 3 p.m. on the same field for a meeting with Ursinus College.
