The New York University men's volleyball team dropped two matches on the second day of the 2010 Wisconsin Invitational, falling to Nazareth College and the Milwaukee School of Engineering to finish the tournament 1-3 on Saturday, March 20.
In the final match of the weekend, the Violets (3-13), currently ranked #15 in the AVCA Division III Men's Coaches Top 15 Poll, held three-point leads midway through the first and third sets but could not hold on in either one as they fell 3-0 (30-23, 30-23, 30-25) to the MSOE Raiders on their home court in Milwaukee, WI.
Leading the way for the Violets in the match was sophomore Pat Dodd, who tallied a team-high 11 kills and hit .364. On defense, Dodd added five digs and two blocks while also recording a service ace.
Also in double digits on offense was senior captain Michael Ferragonio who put down 10 kills.
At the net on defense, sophomore Luke Hamlet put back a match-high seven blocks including one solo. On offense, the middle finished third on the team with seven kills.
Along the back line, sophomore Jay Hayes put up eight digs.
For the Raiders, Max Martin recorded 17 kills while Chris Brandt added seven digs.
In the Violets' first match of the day, the team fell to the Golden Flyers of Nazareth 3-1 (30-28, 30-21, 20-30, 30-14).
Ferragonio led the way in the match, putting down a season-high 16 kills while hitting .310. On defense, the captain added five digs and three blocks.
Dodd tallied 13 kills while also contributing a team-high two service aces.
Putting together his strongest all-around match of the season, junior captain Fran Hodgson put down 12 kills, while adding a team-high 10 blocks at the net including a solo.
On defense, Hayes put together his fifth double-digit dig performance of the season, recording a match-high 10.
For the Golden Flyers, Hans Schroeder put down 15 kills and Dan Mowrey put up 10 digs.
The Violets return to action on Tuesday, March 23, when they return home to host Vassar College. First serve is set for 7:00 pm.
