By holding Case Western Reserve University scoreless for the final 6:21, the New York University women's basketball team emerged with a 52-50 victory over its University Athletic Association (UAA) rival Sunday at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland.
While the Violets (13-7, 5-4 UAA) managed just four points, all from Hailey Kimball, in the final 5:25, they forced the Spartans (11-9, 2-7 UAA) to miss their last 10 shots after Erica Iafelice hit a jumper with 6:21 remaining that gave the home team a 50-48 lead.
NYU responded almost a minute later when Kimball converted a fast-break lay-up. The senior guard then converted a finger roll in traffic with 3:21 left to give the Violets a 52-50 lead on the sixth and final lead change of the second half.
Moreover, it was the defense that helped NYU earn its season-high fourth-straight victory: Case Western shot 30.5% (18-for-59) overall, including a 22.6% (7-for-31) conversion rate over the first 20 minutes as the Violets seized a 27-21 halftime lead.
However, the Spartans overcame a 10-point deficit with a 20-6 surge, producing most of its second-half offense in taking a 41-37 edge with 12:48 left.
Emily Foshag paced the Violets with a season-high-tying 14 points, including four three-pointers, while Kimball and Grace Carmen tallied 10 apiece. Carmen finished with nine rebounds while Kimball collected six. Also for NYU, Chrissy Kilmurray recorded nine points, 14 rebounds and three blocks.
Overall, NYU shot 33.3% from the floor (20-for-60) and from three-point range (5-for-15). The Violets did own a 48-45 rebounding advantage.
Ashleigh Tondo paced Case with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Marissa Miles added 10 tallies.
Next weekend, NYU will return home for its final two regular-season home games, beginning with a Tear It Up! event against the University of Chicago on Friday, Feb. 12, at 6 p.m. The Violets will then host Washington University on Sunday, Feb. 14, at 2 p.m.
