Women's Swimming & Diving Team Finishes Third at UAA Championships

Gormley Named UAA Women's Rookie of the Year

Dietz garnered second-place finishes in the one-meter and three-meter events.

On Saturday, Feb. 20, the New York University women's swimming & diving completed competition at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. The Violets finished in third place in the eight-team field.

The Violets, with a total of 1,188.5 points, finished behind University of Chicago (1,379) and winner Emory (2,065).

Carnegie Mellon University (1,011), University of Rochester (811), Washington University (782), Case Western Reserve University (592.5), and Brandeis University (521) followed the Violets in the standings.

Saturday's highlights included NCAA provisional qualifying times in the 1,650 freestyle by three Violet swimmers. Sophomore Molly Rippe posted a third-place and NCAA A-cut time of 17:14.66. Sophomore Paula Guzman finished in sixth place with a B-cut time of 17:37.28, while Marisa Ayvaliotis also made the B-cut with a 17:45.37 finish for 11th place.

In Saturday's 200 butterfly event, senior co-captain Danielle Hildebrandt and freshman Tatum Gormley finished fourth and fifth with B-cut times of 2:08.23 and 2:08.26, respectively. For her efforts at the UAA Championships, Gormley was honored as the UAA Women's Rookie of the Year. 

The 400 freestyle relay was another Saturday highlight for NYU. Gormley, Hildebrandt, sophomore Kristen Fujii, and junior Chelsea Pfohl posted a fourth-place and NCAA B-cut time of 3:34.97.

On Friday, the Violets posted high finishes in several events. In the three-meter dive, sophomore Kelly Dietz placed second with a total of 424 points.

"That was some of the best competition of the season," said NYU diving coach Scott Donie in reference to Dietz's second-place finish. "I'm happy with the result because she posted some great numbers."

In the 400 individual medley, Gormley garnered a second-place performance with an NCAA B-cut time of 4:31.72. In the 100 butterfly, Pfohl also claimed a second-place finish (57.09). That number also surpassed NCAA provisional qualifying standards. Pfohl added a fourth-place finish and a NCAA B-cut time of 59.05 in the 100 backstroke.

On Thursday, Gormley posted a second-place and NCAA B-cut time of 2:07.79 in the 200 individual medley. Rippe added a sixth-place finish in the 500 freestyle (5:04.44). That time also surpassed NCAA provisional qualifying standards.

Dietz had the Violets off to a fast start on Wednesday. She posted a second-place and NCAA-qualifying total of 418.10 in the one-meter event. Finishing behind Dietz were junior Amanda Moffa with a sixth-place total of 322.05 and senior Skyler Courter with a 12th-place score of 266.50.

The Violets return to action on Saturday, Feb. 27, when the team hosts the NYU Last Chance Invitational. This will be the final opportunity for some area swimmers and divers to post NCAA qualifying times in select events.
