Simpson Invitational Results
The New York University wrestling team had a strong showing when it traveled to Simpson, IA, to compete in the Simpson Invitational on Saturday, December 4.
In a tournament fielding some of the top teams in the country, NYU finished in fifth place out of 15 teams with a score of 63.0. Wartburg College took first with an overall score of 184.0.
While no NYU wrestlers were able to make it to the finals of their individual brackets, several members of the team had solid finishes.
Against strong competition, Matt Magill (165) and Jakub Pawlowski (174) both earned third-place finishes in their respective brackets.
Magill cruised to the semifinals with three straight wins, including a technical fall and pin, before facing top seed Nick LeClere of Coe College. LeClere, the eventual champion, proved to be too much, and won the match with a 5-2 decision victory. However, in the consolation matches that followed, Magill returned to form and won back-to-back bouts to take home third place.
Seeded fifth going into the day, Pawlowski started with a first-round bye. He then won two straight matches to earn a spot in the semifinals of the 174 bracket. In the semifinal match, Pawlowski was unable to best the top seed, Ben Scott of Wartburg, losing the match 8-1. However, like his teammate Magill, Pawlowski was able then to win his next two consolation matches and finish in third place.
“Magill and Jake both wrestled great tournaments,” said assistant coach Corey Luce. “Matt had a tough loss in a close match against a really tough opponent, but he looked strong the whole day. For Jake, this tournament was an eye-opener. He battled throughout the day, and overall this was the best I have seen him wrestle.”
Steve Massey (197), Calvin Hawkes (149) and David Rice (165) all also placed for NYU, each finishing in sixth in their respective weight classes.
The grapplers were also without two key members of the team due to injury, Sabino Galassi (184) and Rudy De La Cruz (285). NYU did not enter wrestlers in either weight class.
“Even though we finished fifth, we are very satisfied with this weekend's results,” said Luce. “The competition at Simpson always includes many top-tier teams, and we were able to finish ahead of three teams that are nationally ranked. The fact that we were able to take fifth in a tournament like this without entering wrestlers in two weight classes is impressive.”
The team will continue its season on December 10 when it travels to Elizabethtown, PA, to participate in a tri-meet against Eizabethtown College and Stevens Institute of Technology.
