It was a weekend of mixed results for the New York University wrestling team, as their season-opening tournament wrapped up on Sunday, November 7, at the 2010 Ithaca College  Invitational in Ithaca, NY.

The grapplers took eighth place out of 11 teams with a final team score of 50.0 points. Taking first was host Ithaca with 191 points.

While the team was not able to capture any individual titles, two NYU wrestlers made it to the championship match of their respective brackets.

Calvin Hawkes was seeded fourth in the 149-pound division going into the weekend. On day one of the tournament he opened with three consecutive wins by decision: 12-8, 9-2 and 9-8. His third-round 9-8 victory came against #5 seed Steve Flathers of Springfield College and advanced Hawkes into the semifinals.

In Sunday's semifinal round, Hawkes upset the #1 seed, two-time All American Blaine Woszczak of Ithaca, by pinning in just 2:26.

In the finals, however, Hawkes fell short of a title when he was pinned by #3 Jon Sillo of Centenary College in 1:06.

In the 184-pound bracket, Sabino Galassi entered the tournament as the top seed. After a first-round bye, he easily won his two remaining matches on Saturday, putting him in a semifinal match-up on Sunday against Joe Negro of Johnson & Wales.

On day two, Galassi continued his winning streak with a 12-3 major decision over Negro.

In the championship bout, Galassi ran into his toughest opponent of the weekend in #3 seed Josue Mendez of Ithaca, and a back-and-forth battle between the two eventually resulted in a tiebreak win for Mendez, 2-1.

The grapplers will continue their season next Sunday, Nov. 14, at the Binghamton University Open in Binghamton, NY.
