Six Violets scored in double figures as the New York University women's basketball team netted its highest point total in nearly two years en route to a 95-51 victory over NYU-Poly on Wednesday night, November 24, at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center.
Kelly Loughney (career-high 16 points), Maggie Ely (15 points), Tana Bertino (13 points), Bianca Storts (12 points), Makenzie Hirz (11 points), and Genny Arnold (career-high 11 points) all hit double digits as NYU scored its most points since December 1, 2008, when the Violets poured in 97 points to defeat SUNY New Paltz. It was also the first time six Violets hit double figures in a game since February 27, 2002.
The impressive, well-rounded offensive performance lifted NYU to 4-0 on the season.
“It was an all around-good effort,” said head coach Stefano Trompeo. “We got out on transition, hit people off screens, didn't rush our shots, and got our feet set.
“We're happy to have four wins,” he added. “At this point last year we already had a loss.”
The Violets ensured that there would be no such blemish on their record this time around from the get-go. A 14-1 run gave NYU a 21-7 lead roughly eight minutes in, and the Violets' lead eventually grew to as high as 18 in the first half.
NYU-Poly (2-1) cut the deficit to 12 at the break, remaining in the game despite being outrebounded by 18 and outshot 48.7% to 35.3% by forcing a slew of NYU turnovers.
But the Violets held on to the ball much better in the second period while continuing to shoot well (44.2%) from the field. NYU closed out the game on a remarkable run, outscoring the Fighting Blue Jays 26-1 in the final 7:13 to record the lopsided victory.
Hirz added a game- and career-high 12 rebounds to record her first career double-double. Shelby Coon and Erica Franke both tied career highs with eight boards, and Alexis Doherty also pulled down eight rebounds in 10 minutes to set a career best.
Cara Bonito doled out a career-high eight assists, and Chelsea Blake also had eight helpers without a turnover.
Kristin Leitheuser led NYU-Poly with 14 points, while Margaux Pickell posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 boards. Tabitha Larsen added 13 points, three assists and three steals for the Fighting Blue Jays.
NYU returns to action on Wednesday, December 1, when it hosts defending Skyline Conference Champion Farmingdale State College at Coles. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
