The New York University wrestling team competed at the Binghamton University Open in Binghamton, NY, on Sunday, November 14.

Matt Magill was the top performer for NYU, winning four matches en route to a sixth-place finish in the 165-pound weight class.

"Matt looked really good.  He beat a bunch of Division I wrestlers," said NYU assistant coach Corey Luce

Magill beat Jackson Salovaara of Harvard University 4-1, then Caleb Wallace of host Binghamton 9-0.  After falling to Justin Kerber of Cornell University, the #1 ranked team in NCAA Division I, Magill rebounded to beat Nick Standish of Columbia University 12-6 and Jonathon Rizzitello of Seton Hall University 4-3.

Magill's day was over when he lost the fifth-place match 7-0 to Marshall Peppelman of Cornell.

"Matt's performance coming off an All-American season and an injury is a good indicator that he's where he needs to be right now," Luce said.

Another pair of wrestlers, David Rice (165 pounds) and Sabino Galassi (184 pounds), each won two matches.

Clement Bommier (141), Calvin Hawkes (149), Spence Sarazin (165), and Jakub Pawlowski (174) each won a match.

There was no team scoring.

"We won a lot of matches in a very tough tournament.  It was a great opportunity to wrestle against some of the top Division I guys," Luce concluded.  "This should get us primed and ready for our two dual meets on Wednesday."

The NYU wrestlers travel uptown to Hunter College to face Yeshiva University, The College of New Jersey and the host Hawks beginning at 3:00pm on Wednesday, November 17.
