In its final non-conference regular season game, the #24 New York University men's soccer team rolled 3-0 over visiting Rowan University on Wednesday night, October 20, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale.
The Violets (9-2-3) controlled the pace of play from the start and outshot the Profs (4-11-2) 26-6. Though the game came in a break from University Athletic Association (UAA) action, the result was an important one for first-place NYU, as in its last contest at Gaelic Park it fell 2-0. Since that defeat the Violets are unbeaten in their last seven.
“We talked about the importance of playing a 90-minute game,” said head coach
Joe Behan. “It was very important to have a good performance heading back into UAA's.”
That good performance was highlighted by a brilliant first goal. In the 39th minute,
Paolo Luciano sent a low, short corner to
Niki Chow, and Chow played the ball off his heel to
Kyle Green at the edge of the box.
Chris Ramirez then took a short feed from Green and ripped a shot off the underside of the crossbar and into the back of the net.
The Violets continued and netted a second goal in the 61st minute.
Danny Weisbaum played a free kick from the right side into the box, which bounced to
Matt Newman all alone in front. The junior knocked the cross in for his first goal of the season. The assist was Weisbaum's first career point.
After the Profs went a man down, NYU added another tally with 10:53 to play. A ball played into the box took a bounce off a defender and went right to
Ian Cassell, who dropped it back to Green for a low shot into the netting.
Matt Stieve turned away Rowan's three shots on frame, including a critical one 15:23 in. Andres Vargas took a long ball over the top and was wide open in front, but Stieve stopped his point-blank shot to keep the score tied in the early going.
By keeping the Profs off the board, Stieve extended his scoreless streak to 425:25, recording his fourth straight shutout and sixth of the season.
The Violets have their longest layoff of the season before returning to action next Friday at the University of Chicago. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 pm central standard time.
