Women's Soccer Falls to #14 Emory

Violets Suffer First Home Defeat

With just two UAA unbeatens left entering today's action, Werner T. Dasbach's Violets are still alive in the wide-open Association race.

Box Score

The New York University women's soccer team suffered its second consecutive University Athletic Association (UAA) setback, falling 2-0 to #14 Emory University on Friday, October 15, at the College of Staten Island. The loss was NYU's first at home all season.

Facing a stifling defense that had allowed a UAA-low seven goals entering the game and that entered the week ranked 20th in Division III in goals-against average the Violets (5-7-2, 1-2) could not get much going offensively, mustering just five shots.

The Eagles (10-1-2, 1-1-1) sent 20 shots at the NYU net, nine of which goalkeeper Rachael Ross turned away – one off her career high. But after shutting out Emory in the first half, Ross could not stop a bang-bang play in the 51st minute.  Lauren Smith took a through ball from Kelly Costopolous near the edge of the box and cut into the middle. Ross charged, but Smith knocked a shot past her to give the Eagles the lead.

Ross made a pair of big saves in a span of just a few seconds in the 73rd minute to keep the Violets alive. But NYU's best chance after that – a turn-and-shoot by Serra Tumay at the edge of the 18 – was blocked by a defender.

The Eagles added an insurance goal with just 1:28 to play on a tricky shot by Liz Harlan, which found its way past a diving Ross, off the left post and in.

“Emory is a very good team,” said head coach Werner T. Dasbach. “If not for a 20-second lapse of concentration, a 0-0 result would have been justified. But you have to have full concentration for 90 minutes.”

NYU returns to action with another UAA tilt at the College of Staten Island, against Carnegie Mellon University, on Sunday. Kickoff is at 11:00 am. Information on the free fan bus to the game is available here.
