A 26-7 run to start the second half erased New York University's late first-half heroics, enabling the University of Chicago women's basketball team to earn a 71-61 victory over its University Athletic Association (UAA) rival Friday night at the Ratner Athletic Center in Chicago.
Prior to the Maroons' (9-4, 1-1 UAA) rally, the Violets (8-5, 0-2 UAA) got seven of Chrissy Kilmurray's 10 points to highlight a 15-3 burst before halftime that allowed the visitors to take a 32-29 lead into the locker room after holding Chicago to 28.6% shooting in the first half. Despite second-half foul trouble, Kilmurray led NYU with 15 points, nine rebounds and a career-high-tying four blocked shots.
However, NYU went more than six minutes into the second half without scoring before Grace Carmen converted a twisting reverse lay-up with 13:51 left and pulled her team within 39-34. From there, Chicago capitalized upon its abilities to grab offensive rebounds (24 in owning a 49-43 rebounding edge), get to the charity stripe (27-for-47, 57.4%), and receive scoring from several sources. Five different Maroons produced points during an 11-0 run that put the home team ahead 55-39 with 7:40 remaining.
Nine different players took second-half free throws for the Maroons, who went 20-for-35 from the foul line over the final 20 minutes. Conversely, NYU earned just 10 trips to the foul line, making six attempts.
NYU climbed within eight points after a late barrage of three-pointers, including one by Erica Franke with 48.3 seconds to go, but never got closer. Jen Hum-Traverso and Chelsea Blake each scored 11 points for the Violets, while Franke added a career-best seven.
Jamie Stinson paced four Chicago double-digit scorers with 13 points, while Dana Kaplan added 12 for the Maroons, who shot 32.8% (20-for-61) while NYU hit 34.3% (23-for-67) of its shots.
NYU caps its Midwestern swing Sunday at #3-ranked Washington University. Tip-off time is 3 p.m. (2 p.m. CST).
