Looking to bounce back from Saturday's tough loss to Brandeis University in its University Athletic Association opener, the NYU women's basketball team visited the College of Staten Island on Monday night and got back on track with a 79-49 win.

The Violets were led in scoring by Makenzie Hirz and Cara Bonito, who netted 14 and 10 points respectively. Erica Franke tallied eight rebounds in 19 minutes and NYU was excellent from the free throw line, making 20 of 22 shots as a team.

With the win, the Violets ran their overall record to 8-4.

“I was proud of the fact that we were able to come back 48 hours after a tough loss and get up for this game,” said NYU head coach Stefano Trompeo. “I thought we did a good enough job of bringing energy, and we got a win, which is the main goal.”

In the first half, NYU held the Dolphins to 23 percent shooting and compiled a 29-16 rebounding advantage to craft a 43-21 lead at the break. The Violets continued to play well in the second half, draining five three pointers on 12 attempts.

It was a balanced effort for NYU as 10 players scored at least four points and every player on the roster played at least eight minutes.

The Violets will return to UAA action on Friday night when take on the University of Chicago in the Windy City. They will then travel to St. Louis and battle Washington University on Sunday. The road trip will be challenging for NYU as both Chicago and Washington present stiff competition and the Violets want to avoid a slow start in UAA play.

“I want us to be able to push the ball and keep the tempo where we want it, which is fast-paced,” Trompeo said of his team's strategy this weekend. “We need to be rested and ready to rock because it's tough to be on the road. Chicago and Washington are two really tough places to play.”
