In the latest installment of a blossoming Metropolitan area men's soccer rivalry, New York University opened its season Tuesday night with a 3-1 loss to 2008 NCAA Division III national runner-up Stevens Institute of Technology at the De Baun Athletic Complex in Hoboken, NJ.
After a quiet start for both sides, Stevens Tech found the back of the net twice. First, Zach Adler advanced up the right flank and floated a perfect cross onto the head of All-American Terrence Johnson to make it 1-0 at the 15:09 mark. At 26:24, Todd Sheridan tapped home a cross John Radvany sent from near the endline to push the Ducks' advantage to 2-0.
A Johnson tally at 82:34 extended the Ducks' lead to 3-0 before Kyle Green produced his first collegiate goal at 87:36 for NYU's first goal of the year.
Matt Stieve started between the pipes for the Violets, but did not make a save in his 45 minutes of action. Marek Urbanski played the second half and put aside eight shots, including two from point-blank range during one rapid-fire sequence.
Zach Carr made two saves for Stevens, which owned edges in shots (17-7) and corner kicks (6-1).
In the game, the trio of Green, Michael Samaroo and Ronnie Scardino made their first collegiate starts. Meanwhile, five other players made their Violet debuts: Matthew Berkowitz, Ethan Evans, Mike Flejsierowicz, Nick Ichien, and John Twomey.
NYU will try to break into the win column in its next game Saturday, Sept. 5, when it hosts City College of New York at New Jersey Institute of Technology's Lubetkin Field. Opening kick is set for 6 p.m.
