The New York University men's volleyball team let its third victory of the weekend slip through its fingers as it fell to Nazareth College in four sets in the final match of the Carthage College Invitational on Saturday, March 14, at the Tarble Arena in Kenosha, WI.
NYU finished the weekend 2-2.
The Violets (5-16), currently ranked #10 in the Bison/AVCA Division III Coaches Top 15 Poll, took the first set in impressive fashion. However the fifth-ranked Golden Flyers (22-4) narrowly pulled out the next three to win the match 3-1 (24-30, 30-28, 31-29, 30-25).
Senior captain Devin Zolnowski continued to show no ill effects of his shoulder stiffness from the previous day as he put down a match-high 24 kills along with six digs, four aces and three blocks.
Four other Violets also tallied double-digit kills in the match.
Junior Michael Ferragonio, sophomore Francis Hodgson and freshman Patrick Dodd all put down 10 kills, while freshman Luke Hamlet notched 11 kills along with a team-high five blocks.
On defense, freshman Jay Hayes continued his strong play, putting up a team-high nine digs while passing a perfect 29 for 29.
For the Golden Flyers, senior Joe Petzoldt put down 20 kills while fellow senior Chris DeHority put up a match-high 11 digs.
In NYU's first match of the day, the team was bolstered by three players with double-digit kill totals and an overall 69-45 advantage, as it easily dealt with host Carthage in four sets.
The Violets used strong showings from their starting seven on both offense and defense to defeat the 13th-ranked Red Men (4-22) 3-1 (30-20, 30-32, 30-25, 30-20).
On offense, Zolnowski led the Violets with 24 kills.
Ferragonio also put up big numbers on offense, tallying a career-high 17 kills while hitting .414. He also put up 11 digs for his second-double double of the season.
Hamlet was a force at the net for NYU, putting down 11 kills while also putting back a team-high eight blocks.
On defense, senior captain Ilan Goldstein notched a match-high 13 digs while also putting up 55 assists.
Hayes also put up 13 digs on defense while passing a perfect 21 for 21.
The Violets return to action on Sunday when they travel to Romeoville, IL, to take on Division II Lewis University in their final match of the team's spring break road trip.
