Four NYU Grapplers Still Vying for Titles In Ithaca

Martino, Magill, Myers, Galassi Advance To Semis

Day one of the Ithaca Invitational is in the books, and four NYU grapplers are still in the hunt for individual titles. 

Competing on Saturday in Ithaca, NY, junior co-captains Gregg Martino and Matt Magill reached the semifinals of the 141-pound and 165-pound brackets, respectively.

After receiving a first-round bye, Martino defeated Springfield College's Kevin Moss, 12-3, and Junior Amazan of Ithaca College, 9-1. He will square off with Sean Messina of Hunter College in the semis.

Magill also won two matches en route to the semis, defeating Ryan Lefaivre of Roger Williams University, 11-7, and Jon Conroy of SUNY Cortland, 10-6. Magill will open Sunday against Springfield's Chris Perry.

Meanwhile, sophomore Jamie Myers is in the semis of the 197-pound draw and freshman Sabino Galassi has reached the semis of the 184-pound tournament in his first collegiate competition.

After receiving two byes, Myers beat SUNY Oswego's Kyle Sheridan, 11-9, to advance to the semis. He will take on Ithaca's Thomas Heckman on Sunday.

Galassi also received two byes before topping Ithaca's Scott Mack, 12-5, to earn his ticket to the semis, where he will face Jared Myhrberg of SUNY Cortland.

In the team standings, NYU is currently in fifth place with 54 points.
