The New York University women's volleyball team swept Chapman University on Friday, Oct. 9, in La Verne, CA,.to finish the first day of the University of La Verne Leopard Invitational a perfect 2-0,
The Violets (18-5), using their momentum from their first match of the day, jumped on the Panthers (10-9) early and went on to defeat them 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 29-27).
Overall, NYU out-killed Champan 55-36 and held a 9-0 blocking advantage.
Continuing her day of dominant play on offense, freshman Kendyl Dunn tallied a career-best 21 kills and hit .432 with four blocks and four digs.
Also in double-digits on offense was sophomore captain Elizabeth Dick who notched a double-double with 10 kills and 15 digs.
On defense, freshmen Natalie Fernandez and Alexis Schwartz, and junior Rachel Sawyer all put up 13 digs while Fernandez added seven kills.
For the Panthers, sophomore Nalani Haviland recorded nine kills and senior Linda Ly added a match-high 28 digs.
In the first match of the day, the team rallied from a 0-2 deficit to defeat Nazareth College for the third time in 2009.
The Violets struggled with their hitting and passing coming out of the gate, quickly dropping the first two sets to the Golden Flyers (18-8). NYU rallied however, holding Nazareth to only 13 kills over the final three sets, winning them all and taking the match 3-2 (23-25, 21-25, 25-22, 25-15, 15-10).
Overall, the Violets held the Golden Flyers to only 31 kills a negative hitting percentage for the match while out-blocking them 11 to 6.
Recording her fifth consecutive and 18th overall double-digit kill performance of the season, Dunn tallied a match-high 15 kills and hit .333 while adding a match-high six blocks including a career-best three solos.
Also putting up big numbers on offense, freshman Shelby Oliver recorded her first double-digit kill performance of her career, tallying 11 along with two blocks.
On defense, the Violets had four players in double digits.
Schwartz led the team with a career-high 15 while adding two service aces.
Also tallying 15 was Dick who also notched eight kills and three service aces.
Sawyer put together her eighth consecutive double-digit digs match and her 17th overall, putting up 12 while adding three service aces.
Fernandez was the final Violet in double digits, putting up 11 while adding five kills and a service ace.
For the Golden Flyers, senior Katelynn Reed and freshman Amy Johnson both recorded seven kills while senior Mallorie Clary notched 22 digs.
The Violets return to action tomorrow for the second day of the Leopard Invitational. The team will take on 10th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at 9:00 (pst) and host La Verne at 2:00 pm (pst).
