Women's Volleyball Drops Two UAA Matches in Rochester

Violets Fall to 1-2 in the UAA

The New York University women's volleyball team fell in four sets to the University of Chicago in their second match on Sunday and fell to 1-2 at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Round Robin #1 at the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY.

The Violets (16-5, 1-2 UAA) struggled the entire match against the Maroons (13-8, 1-1 UAA) hitting a season-low .100 as they fell 3-1 (25-19, 19-25, 25-19, 25-23).

Freshman Kendyl Dunn continued her productive offense, putting down a match-high 15 kills and hitting .500 with two blocks and two digs. For the weekend, Dunn led the team with 39 kills and hit .545.

On defense, junior Rachel Sawyer tallied a match-high 21 digs and added a season-best six service aces. Sawyer notched a team-high 46 digs over the weekend as well as eight service aces.

Also putting up double-digit digs on defense were sophomore captain Elizabeth Dick and freshman Natalie Fernandez, who both put up 12.  For the weekend, Fernandez tallied 27 kills and 33 digs while Dick added 26 kills and 34 digs.

For the Maroons, sophomores Lauren Tarpey and Colleen Belak both recorded 11 kills while freshman Samantha Brown put up 21 digs.

In the team's first match on Sunday, the Violets dropped a hard-fought battle to third-ranked Emory University in four sets.

The Violets played extremely tough, taking the second set off of the defending NCAA Division III National Champion Eagles (18-2, 3-0 UAA). But, NYU still fell short 3-1 (25-22, 19-25, 25-17, 25-20).

Leading the way on offense for NYU was Dunn who put down a match-high 14 kills and hit .667 with four blocks and five digs.

Dick put together her second straight double-double, putting down 10 kills along with 12 digs. Fernandez# also put down 10 kills while adding seven digs and a block.

On defense, Sawyer tallied a match-high 15 digs while also adding a service ace.

For the Eagles, sophomore Jessica McAlvany recorded 10 kills while fellow sophomore Natalie Schonefeld put up 14 digs along with 38 assists.

The Violets return to the court next weekend when they travel out west to La Verne, CA, to take part in the University of La Verne Leopard Invitational. NYU will take on Nazareth College and Chapman University on Friday, and University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and host La Verne on Saturday.
