Head coach Ed Caesar collected the 250th victory of his career as the New York University swept host Ithaca College to finish 2-0 on the first day of the 2009 New York State Regional Challenge, Saturday, October 31, in Ithaca, NY.
The Violets (24-7), who extended their unbeaten streak in New York State to 32 matches dating back to September 6th of 2008, secured the top seed in Pool B of the tournament with the 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-19) victory over the Bombers (21-15).
Recording her 26th double-digit kill performance of the season, freshman Kendyl Dunn tallied a team-high 12 along with two blocks and a service ace to lead the Violets.
Also in double figures for NYU were freshman Alexa Carrasco and sophomore captain Elizabeth Dick who both put down 10 while Carrasco added two service aces and Dick tallied three service aces and nine digs.
On the defensive side of the ball, junior Rachel Sawyer put up a team-high 12 digs.
For the Bombers, Kate Thoene recorded 15 kills while Chelsea Hayes added 14 digs.
In the Violets first match of the day, the team easily swept past SUNY Potsdam.
The Violets held the Bears (6-28) to only 13 kills for the match as they defeated them 3-0 (25-13, 25-11, 23-13) in just under one hour.
Leading NYU on offense was Dunn who tallied 10 kills and hit .667 along with two service aces and a block in two sets of play.
Also putting up strong numbers on offense was Carrasco who put down a season-high nine kills while adding six digs and a service ace.
On defense, Sawyer put together her 21st double-digit dig performance of the season, putting up a team-high 12 along with a career-high seven service aces.
Also in double-digits on defense was freshman Alexis Schwartz who notched 10 along with a service ace.
For the Bears, Kayla Howard put down five kills while Samantha Strader added 10 digs.
The Violets return to action tomorrow when they take on Lycoming College in the final match of Pool B play. The team will then take on the winner of Pool A at 4:30 pm for the tournament title.
