After netting the tying goal in the 11th minute, the New York University men's soccer team allowed three unanswered goals and suffered a 4-1 setback against University Athletic Association (UAA) rival and nationally ranked Carnegie Mellon University on Sunday afternoon in Pittsburgh.
Ricky Griffin, who also scored twice, flicked a lead pass to Keith Haselhoff, who parried it over Marek Urbanski's (5 saves) head to give the Tartans (13-1, 4-0 UAA) a 1-0 lead 3:26 into the contest. Facing its fourth ranked side this season, NYU (4-7-2, 0-2-2 UAA) evened things up when Kyle Green notched his team-leading third goal off a Brandon Hintz feed at 10:51.
In the next 15:32 Carnegie Mellon, ranked #9 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas Division III National Poll and #12 in the D3Soccer.com Top 25, took control. Griffin chipped a shot over the goal line at 17:54 off a Ryan Browne pass. Browne set up Pat Lutz' tally at 26:23 from six yards out to make it 3-1, Tartans.
Griffin capped the scoring by burying a shot to the far post after receiving a Lutz pass at 64:36. Carnegie Mellon owned a 13-7 edge in shots.
NYU's best chance to score again came at 76:19, when Matt Newman's header of a Ryan Horch corner kick hit the post. The Violets held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
NYU returns to action Saturday, Oct. 24, when it travels to Maspeth, NY, face the John Jay College of Criminal Justice for a noon contest.
