Ronnie Scardino's first collegiate goal gave New York University a short-lived first-half lead before the Violets settled for a 1-1 tie against University Athletic Association (UAA) men's soccer rival Case Western Reserve University on Saturday afternoon at the College of Staten Island Soccer Complex.
NYU is now 4-6-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the UAA, while Case Western Reserve is 6-4-3 and also 0-1-1 in the UAA.
Each team found the back of the net in the first 13 minutes. NYU seized a 1-0 lead when Scardino collected a pass from Nick Coulson and volleyed it over Case Western goalkeeper Ben Yabrow's head from the 18 at 10:24. The Spartans countered at 12:39 when Kyle Alsup scorched a shot into the lower right corner from 25 yards. Otherwise, both teams struggled to create scoring chances in the opening half, as NYU owned a 3-1 edge in shots going into intermission.
This changed quickly over the second half and both 10-minute overtimes. Each team had a quality chance in the second half: Matt Stieve's leapt and punched an attempt by Case Western's Alex King's over the crossbar 44 seconds into the second half, while the Violets' best chance over the final 45 minutes came when Kyle Green rocketed a shot that Niro Wimasalena cleared it just short of the goal line at 59:09.
In the first overtime, NYU got off two shots. Over the final 10 minutes, the Spartans fired off five attempts and owned a 14-8 edge in shots overall. However, the Violets claimed a 14-10 advantage in corner kicks.
Marek Urbanski played the first half in goal and made one save before Stieve came on for the final 65 miinutes, making three key saves. Ben Yabrow stopped three shots for Case Western, while the Spartans also notched two teaem saves.
NYU returns to action Friday, Oct. 16, with a 5 p.m. road match at Emory University in Atlanta.
