Women’s Fencing Team Hosts the NYU Invitational

Junior co-captain Alyxandra Mattison posted three 3-0 marks

The New York University women's fencing team hosted its annual invitational at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center in Manhattan on Sunday, Jan. 25.

Four teams ranked in the U.S. College Fencing Coach's poll competed at the invitational: #2 University of Notre Dame, #3 Ohio State University, #4 Columbia University, and #6 Northwestern University.

The Violets won one of their six matches in the competition, making their overall record 5-8 on the season.

After falling to Ohio State in the first round, NYU rebounded to trounce Wayne State University 20-7, including 8-1 marks in both sabre and foil.

The Violets then dropped the third and fourth rounds to St. John's University and Yale University, despite a 5-4 victory over St. John's and a narrow 4-5 loss to Yale by the foil team.

After the lunch break, NYU dropped their fifth round to Notre Dame and their sixth to Northwestern, although both the sabre and foil teams boasted 4-5 performances against the sixth-ranked Wildcats.

The top performer for the Violets was junior co-captain Alyxandra Mattison, who went 9-7 in sabre on the day and posted 3-0 performances against Wayne State, Yale and Northwestern.

The NYU women's fencing team will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 31, as it travels to Medford, MA, to face off against Tufts University.
