Jessica McEntee tallied a season-high 24 points and snared 17 rebounds, leading four players in double digits as #22-ranked New York University turned back Lehman College, 75-58, in non-conference women's basketball action Tuesday night at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center.
McEntee went 9-for-12 from the field, 5-for-6 from the charity stripe, and also added three steals and two assists in 31 minutes just days after missing her first game since her freshman year due to illness.
"I'd say she's back on track," NYU interim head coach Stefano Trompeo said.
There were several other reasons why the Violets improved to 5-0: junior Jen Hum-Traverso (3-for-4 FG, 6-for-6 FT) tied her career high with 13 points, sophomore Emily Foshag produced a career-best 12 tallies and junior Grace Carmen added 10 points, three rebounds and three steals.
Another was a superb NYU defensive effort that limited the Lightning (3-2) to 28.9% shooting (22-for-76), including an 8-for-32 (25.0%) evening from beyond the three-point arc as they took the most three-pointers in Coles Sports Center history.
Lehman scored the first two buckets of the second half to pull within 34-27, but a free throw by Carmen, a three-point play by McEntee and a trey from Hum-Traverso stretched the lead to 41-27 with 14:39 remaining.
The Lightning eventually pulled with 46-36 after a three-pointer by Kelly Ash, but Carmen netted six points and Hum-Traverso added four during an 11-2 surge that put NYU ahead 57-38 with 7:04 to go.
"I think our starters were more aggressive offensively today," Trompeo said. They were looking for their shots and knocking them down."
Lehman got 18 points from All-American Sally Nnamani, who was held to 7-for-26 shooting while also contributing 11 rebounds, four assists, four blocks and two steals. Paulie Tuazon added 13 points and nine rebounds for the Lightning, who were outrebounded 54-45.
NYU returns to action Monday, Dec. 1, when it travels to face SUNY New Paltz at 7 p.m.
