The New York University women's basketball team put on one of its finest defensive displays in the shot-clock era, holding New Jersey City University scoreless for a stretch of 12:10 in a 72-32 non-conference victory Tuesday night at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center in Jersey City, NJ.

Prior to scoring with 10:28 remaining, New Jersey City's (0-2) last bucket came with 2:38 remaining in the first half.  Overall, the Gothic Knights shot just 19.7% (12-for-61) and committed 17 turnovers.  The 32 points allowed tied for the eighth fewest NYU has allowed since 2000-01, equaling the mark allowed in a 76-32 rout of Russell Sage College on Jan. 16, 2001.

"That has been my focus with them this season," NYU interim head coach Stefano Trompeo said of emphasizing defense.  "On offense, we want to get out and run.  It starts with getting a defensive stop and getting a defensive rebound."

Powered by their defense, the Violets got out and ran plenty, with senior Jessica McEntee (14 points, 15 rebounds) tallying 12 of her points in a 35-4 run that stretched from the middle of the first half (8:05) until midway through the final stanza (10:28), taking an insurmountable 54-17 lead.

In the first half, NYU turned a 19-13 lead into a 38-17 halftime cushion thanks to a 19-4 run.  As they did in their opening victory over Mount St. Mary College on Saturday, the Violets got balanced scoring: six different players contributed to the spurt, led by junior Hailey Kimball's five tallies.

In the first 20 minutes, six different NYU players produced at least four points and nine scored overall, with the trio of Gena Brown, Grace Carmen and Sarah McDevitt leading the way six points apiece.  The Violets outscored the Gothic Knights 14-2 in points off turnovers, 24-10 on points in the paint and 19-2 on points off the bench in the first half.

Sophomore Christine Kilmurray scored a career-high eight points for NYU, while McDevitt also netted eight and sophomore Olivia Tromm added seven tallies as 12 different players scored.  Senior Megan Foxgrabbed eight rebounds for the Violets, who owned a 58-37 edge on the glass.

Nidia Carmona and Ebony Cunningham each led New Jersey City with eight points.

NYU returns to action Friday, Nov. 21, when it hosts FDU-Florham in the first round of the NYU Tip-Off Tournament at 6 p.m.  In the other Tip-Off Tournament contest, Rutgers-Camden will face the College of Mount St. Vincent at 8 p.m.
