Men's Soccer Falls to Carnegie Mellon

The Violets will regroup and get ready to face Emory on Sunday.

The New York University men's soccer team lost to Carnegie Mellon University by a 2-0 score on Friday at Gaelic Park at Manhattan College.

In their first of two University Athletic Association (UAA) match-ups this weekend, the Violets (5-8-3, 0-5-0 UAA) were unable to score a goal against the Tartans (12-2-1, 3-2-0 UAA). Starting in only his second contest of the season, sophomore goalkeeper Matt Stieve made two saves, one in the first minute of the game, in the first half.

At 36:26, however, Carnegie Mellon junior Ryan Browne dribbled past a couple of defenders and converted a shot from the top of the box for his eighth goal of the season. In the second half, the Tartans  added another goal at 62:04, as Browne put a pass from Ricky Griffin into the back of the net for his  ninth goal of the season. 

Junior goalkeeper Marek Urbanskiwho replaced Stieve at intermission, made two saves in the second half.

“We've been struggling a bit,” admitted NYU assistant coach Jon Simos.  “But we'll keep working and practicing hard and try to end our season on a positive note.”

The Violets only had three shots for the game, led by freshman Badr Bevaart's two. Freshman Brian Testa took the third for NYU. Carnegie took nine shots and had four corner kicks compared to NYU's five. 

Stieve took the loss as his record fell to 1-1-0 on the season. 

The Violets face UAA-leading Emory University on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at the College of Staten Island.
