Freshman Badr Bevaart netted his first collegiate goal, but New York University dropped a 2-1 decision in overtime against #21-ranked Washington University in University Athletic Association (UAA) action Friday night in St. Louis.
Washington (9-3-0, 2-1-0 UAA) tallied the game-winning goal just 2:38 into extra time when Nat Zenner banged home a rebound of a free kick off the foot of Nick Karr. The Bears became just the second team in 13 games to score more than one goal against the Violets (5-5-3, 0-3-0 UAA).
Although NYU owned a 12-8 edge on shots, it took until the 75:37 mark for the Violets to enter the scoring column. Bevaart headed home a cross off the foot of junior Brandon Hintz into the far corner of the goal, forging a 1-1 tie.
Washington had seized a 1-0 lead just 32 seconds into the contest when Pierre Hoppenot beat the Violet defense down the sideline and crossed a ball to Patrick McLean, who tapped it home to give the Bears the early advantage.
Junior Marek Urbanskimade three saves in the loss for NYU, which owned a 5-2 edge on corner kicks. John Smelcer also made three saves for Washington.
NYU will look to salvage a split of its two-game, UAA Midwestern swing on Sunday, Dec. 19, when it travels to the University of Chicago for a 1:30 p.m. (CST) contest.
