Four Violet runners finished among the top-10 as the New York University men's cross country team placed second at the annual Metropolitan Championship in Van Cortlandt Park on Friday afternoon.

With each runner posting a personal-best time, NYU totaled 41 points and finished behind only Columbia University (22 points).  The Violet easily out-distanced third-place Rutgers University (86 points).

Junior Zach Maher led the way for the Violets with a fourth-place finish in a time of 26:09 over the 8,000-meter course. He was followed by fellow junior Calvin Lee (7th place, 26:20), senior Mark Hess (8th place, 26:21), and sophomore Sebastian Schwelm (9th place, 26:26). All four of the runners ran personal bests, as did the team's fifth scorer, sophomore Matt Turlip (13th place, 26:34).

"Our guys ran a great race, very controlled and within themselves," said NYU head coach Nick McDonough. "We ran as a pack pretty much until the last mile."

NYU, the only non-Division I team in the competition, went into the race as defending champions. Only Columbia's top three finishers (Bobby Hartnett, Ryan Whithall, Ross Turner) crossed the tape ahead of Maher.

Rounding out the top-five teams were Fordham University 116 points) and Manhattan College (172 points).

NYU freshman Jack Fitzhenry (14th place, 26:42) and senior Geoffrey McGrane  (21st place, 26:56) also ran personal bests.

"We had a lot of PR's from guys who haven't been asked to do a lot over the last few years," McDonough said. "I was pleased by the way everyone stepped up in our first five-mile race of the season."
