Mark McLean

Mark McLean, who is in his fifth season as an assistant coach with the New York University wrestling program after coming on board for the 2007-08 campaign, works primarily with the squad’s upper weight classes.

McLean’s guidance helped NYU go 47-28 in his first four seasons. The squad finished 9-10 last season, and a total of five NYU wrestlers won University Athletic Association (UAA) crowns – the most of the three UAA squads – as the team missed out on the Association Championship by just one point in the decisive dual meet. In addition, Matt Magill made his second straight trip to the NCAA Division III Championships and became just the fifth NYU wrestler to reach 100 career victories.

In McLean’s first season on staff, the squad went 16-1, captured its fourth UAA Championship, finished an all-time best 12th at the NCAA Championships, and ended the season ranked a program-best #13 in the final Brute-Adidas National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division III Team Rankings. Stephen Hult (141 pounds) and Takafumi Hashimoto (157) earned All-America honors after placing third and fifth, respectively, in their weight classes. In addition, Nick Coleman (184) also qualified for nationals.

McLean graduated from NYU’s Leonard N. Stern School of Business in 2004 with a Bachelor of Science degree in management information systems.

A two-year wrestler for NYU, McLean posted a career record of 34-17. He served as a captain during his senior year, won the 197-pound title at the Brute-Adidas Invitational and earned NWCA Academic All-America honors.

In addition to his role with NYU’s wrestling program, McLean also serves as a commodities trader at the New York Mercantile Exchange in Manhattan.

Prior to coming to NYU, McLean attended Middlesex County College (2000-01), where he was a Junior College All-American after finishing eighth at the Junior National Championships in the heavyweight division. He first attended the University of Virginia (1998-2000) on both an academic and athletic scholarship.

A native of Plainfield, NJ, McLean resides in Jersey City, NJ.
