Joe Roman has returned as an assistant coach with the New York University men’s and women’s track & field teams. Working exclusively with the Violets’ throwers, he returns after a one-year hiatus.
Roman previously served in this capacity at NYU for three season (2013-15).
In 2015, Roman coached Antony Zeng to a second-place finish in the shot put at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Indoor Championships. Outdoors, Carter Beardsley produced a second-place finish in the event, while Boris Nimcevic took third place in the javelin. Beardsley’s throw of 14.94 meters at the Princeton University Invitational on May 1, was the furthest distance of any UAA athlete that season.
On the women’s team, sophomore Jillian Edwards finished that season among the top-10 on the UAA lists in the shot put (#7), javelin (#8), hammer throw (#9), and discus (#10).
Roman came to NYU with decades of experience as a throws coach, both on an individual basis and with elite track & field organizations both nationally and internationally. Most recently, Roman has been conducting coaching clinics for the New York City Public School Athletic League since 2005 and has been the Director and Throwing Coach at Gotham Spark Athletic Club since 2012.
Prior to coaching at NYU, Roman also served as a throwing coach at the City College of New York (CCNY) during the 2011-12 season.
Roman’s throwing experience dates back to the 1950’s in France, when he was among the top junior hammer throwers in Europe. Throughout the 1960’s, he coached on the international level with the Junior National Teams of France and Romania. In 1973, Roman moved to the United States and served as a coach and consultant for individual athletes throughout the country.
In the 1980’s, Roman returned to consult for the French and Romanian Junior National Teams before returning to personal coaching in 1990. From 2005-10, he served as the Head Coach for throws at the Armory Foundation.
Additionally, Roman has been certified as a Master Official for the USATF (United States of America Track & Field) since 1995. He is also a member of the USATF Training Committee and owns a level 3 throwing coach certification from the organization.
Roman attended Universite Nice from 1965-1971, where he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in sports science. His master’s degree includes certifications in nutrition as well as strength and conditioning.
A native of Nice, France, Roman currently resides in Ardsley, NY.
