Christian Cantwell joined the NYU swimming and diving program during the 2006-07 season as the team’s head assistant coach. While his primary coaching responsibility is the development of the sprinters, Cantwell also assists with mid-distance and distance groups. In addition to his coaching duties, Cantwell serves as the team’s head recruiting coordinator.
Cantwell helped guide the 2010-11 squad to a 4-3 dual-meet record and a sixth-place finish at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships.
In 2009-10, the Violets went 7-4 and placed fifth at the UAA Championships. Cantwell’s top sprinter, Eric Pcholinski, won two events at the meet and was named UAA Swimmer of the Year.
Prior to his arrival at NYU, Cantwell served as an assistant coach for the National Development team (15-18) for the Camden County (NJ) YMCA from 2004-06. From 2002-05, Cantwell also coached stroke, turn and technique at the U.S. Swim clubs Jersey Wahoos (NJ) and Ft. Lauderdale Swim Team (FL)
A two-time Olympic Trials qualifier (2000, 2004), Cantwell is a four-time Senior National finalist, a Junior National champion and a two-time New Jersey High School state champion.
A native of Philadelphia, PA, and a Manhattan resident, Cantwell is a 2003 graduate of Auburn University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications.
