In her 17th season as an assistant coach of the New York University men’s and women’s fencing teams, Pam Kray Gallivan has been instrumental in the continued success of the Violets’ program.

Since joining the program in 1995-96, the Violets have posted a top-25 national finish every season, including a ninth-place showing in her inaugural campaign.

The 2010-11 season was a continuation of the program’s success, as another student-athlete qualified for the NCAA Fencing Championships. Sophomore Philip Jamesson represented NYU at the NCAA’s, finishing 16th in foil to lead the Violets to a 23rd-place finish in the combined men’s and women’s team standings.

The women’s team went 11-14 in ‘10-11, while the men posted a record of 8-15.
The 2009-10 season was also a huge success, as three student-athletes qualified for the NCAA Fencing Championships. Sam Roukas (sabre), Byron Neslund (epee) and Jamesson (foil) represented NYU at the NCAA’s. The Violets’ combined men’s and women’s teams placed the highest of all Division III squads at the competition, coming in 16th place. It was the 17th consecutive season in which NYU posted a top-20 national finish.
In 2008-09, seven Violets qualified for the NCAA Fencing Championships, with Sophie Ciaravino earning All-America honors in foil. The combined group finished 15th in the nation, the highest of any of the competing NCAA Division III teams. Both the men’s and women’s teams finished with double-digit victories (the men went 11-10, the women 10-13), and recorded wins against some of the nation’s top programs.

During Kray Gallivan’s tenure with the program, NYU has finished as high as ninth three times at the NCAA Championships, most recently in 2004-05 (also in 1995-96 and 1997-98).

In recognition of her expertise, Kray Gallivan has been a member of six NYU coaching staffs that have earned University Athletic Association (UAA) Coaching Staff of the Year honors. The men's team has won the UAA Championship eight times during her tenure (1996-2003), while the women's team has captured the championship six times (1996-2000, 2003). The last UAA Championship was held during the 2002-03 season.

Prior to joining the coaching staff, Kray Gallivan introduced people of all ages to the sport as part of NYU’s recreational and community fencing programs.

A native of Kenosha, WI, Kray Gallivan attended the University of Wisconsin and earned both a Bachelor of Arts degree (1973) and a Master of Fine Arts degree (1980).

On the strip, Kray Gallivan was a sabre finalist at the United States Fencing National Championships in 1991, as well as a sabre bronze medalist at the Nike World Master’s Games in Portland, OR, in 1998.

The founder of Nil Hubris LLC, a graphic arts studio in Manhattan, Kray Gallivan resides in New York City.
