Now in his 17th year as Head Coach after taking over the program prior to the 1998-99 season, Nick McDonough has built championship-level men’s cross country and track & field programs at New York University.

Already entrenched as one of the finest coaches in all of Division III , especially in the area of distance running, McDonough’s knowledge and training methods helped NYU capture the 2007 NCAA Division III National Cross Country Championship after finishing as the national runner-up in 2006.

In 2013-14, McDonough led the cross country team to its eighth straight appearance and a 20th-place finish at the NCAA Championship. Graduate student Dylan Karten earned All-America honors with his 20th-place finish. As a team, the Violets were ranked as high as #1 in the region and #6 in the nation during the campaign.

The Violets performed well throughout the cross country season, highlighted by second-place finishes at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship and the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championship.

In track & field, the Violets placed fifth at the UAA Indoor Championships, with several freshmen gaining top-three positions in their events. Budd Brown finished second in the 400m, while Antony Zeng and Carter Beardsley went 2-3 in the shot put. One of the team leaders, junior Zac Kish, was a runner-up in the 800m.

Brown went on to take second in the 500m at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Indoor Championships, while Kish was an anchor in the victorious 4x800m relay. The same foursome of sophomore Max Avila, Kish, sophomore Gerald Gorman, and freshman Curtis Mann also had a stellar outing at the prestigious Millrose Games, finishing sixth in a collegiate race with a season-best time of 7:45.17.

The Violets also took fifth at the Outdoor UAA’s. In was another strong showing for the freshmen, as Brown took third in the 400m and Beardsley and Zeng once again brought home silver and bronze. Kish was again runner-up in the 800m, sophomore Matthew Powers was runner-up in the 100m and Karten earned silver in the 1,500m.

Karten had a stellar outdoor season, qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the 5,000m. At the Penn Relays, he set a school record of 14:09.17 in the event.

McDonough’s team also produced a new record in the 4x1,500m as senior Ryan Gilmore, Karten, and juniors Dharan Kadiyala and Sebastian Oja ran 15:57.91 at the Raleigh Relays.

The 2012-13 campaign featured success for McDonough’s squads across all three seasons, including numerous individual accomplishments and record-breaking performances.

McDonough led his cross country squad to victory at the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championship. Five of his athletes (Karten, Kevin Bonilla, Dave Knowles, Kyle DeLeon, and Oja), earned All-Region honors while McDonough was named Atlantic Region Coach of the Year.

Strong finishes were common throughout the cross country season, as NYU finished no worse than third in any regular-season competition. The Violets placed second at the UAA Championship and capped off their season with a 22nd-place finish at the NCAA Championship.

McDonough’s track & field squad also found success both indoors and outdoors. Powers emerged as a star, breaking the school’s 200m indoor record three times throughout the course of the season, eventually establishing the mark at 21.83. Powers won the 200m at the UAA Indoor Championships and Daniel McKinney took first in the 400m for the third consecutive year. The high point of the indoor season came at the ECAC Division III Championships, where the Violets finished fourth of 51 teams.

The Violets hosted the UAA Outdoor Championships and McKinney captured gold in the 400m for the fourth time in his career and Karten won the 10,000m title. Both runners qualified for the NCAA Championships, with Karten finishing 16th in the 5,000m and McKinney earning his second career All-American distinction with a fourth-place finish in the 400m.

At the conclusion of the ’12-13 season, two of McDonough’s athletes were honored by NYU with end-of-year awards as Powers was named Male Freshman Athlete of the Year and McKinney earned the Senior Athlete of the Year award.

The 2011-12 season was another successful one for McDonough and his teams. The cross country squad placed second at the UAA Championship, third at the NCAA Atlantic Regional and 19th at the NCAA Championship. On the track, Matt Turlip earned the fifth and sixth All-America honors of his career, finishing fifth indoors in the mile and eighth outdoors in the 1,500 meters at the NCAA Championships. McKinney was selected UAA Indoor Most Outstanding Performer – Running Events after capturing three titles at the meet, while Jon Simon was chosen UAA Rookie of the Year.

In 2010-11, the cross country team posted a 10th-place finish at the NCAA Championship thanks to strong performances by Andrew Zitek and Sebastian Schwelm, who finished 36th and 37th, respectively.

NYU’s most accomplished performer in men’s track & field during the 2010-11 season was Turlip, who earned All-America honors in the mile and distance medley relay at the NCAA Indoor Championships and in the 1,500 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Turlip also broke NYU’s 44-year-old 1,500-meter record, running 3:45.76 in the event at the Swarthmore Invitational. At the ECAC Indoor Championships, the distance medley team of James Patterson, McKinney, Steven Au-Yeung, and Turlip set a new NYU mark (9:54.88) and went on to earn All-America honors. Individually,
McKinney won the 400-meter title at the UAA Indoor Championships, while Patterson captured the 800 meters. McKinney continued his dominance in the 200 and 400 meters at the UAA Outdoor Championships, winning both races and earning UAA Most Outstanding Performer- Running Events.

From 2006-09, McDonough led his teams to four consecutive UAA Cross Country Championships. In addition to producing the NCAA Division III Championship in 2007 and a national runner-up finish in 2006, McDonough also led the Violets to their highest finish ever at the NCAA Indoor Championships, placing 10th in 2007.

In 2006-07, McDonough saw two of his student-athletes, Hany Abdallah and Ryan Williams, become the first-ever Violets to earn All-America status in all three seasons (cross country, indoor track, outdoor track). From 2006-10, McDonough’s athletes received 21 All-America accolades across all seasons.

Such efforts have helped McDonough receive NCAA Division III Atlantic Region Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year honors three times (2006, 2007, 2012) and UAA Cross Country Coaching Staff of the Year accolades four times (2006-09). He also earned U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association National Coach of the Year accolades following the team's NCAA Championship season in 2007.

McDonough is also in his seventh full season as Head Coach of the NYU women’s cross country/track & field program. He has helped lift the women’s programs to the same heights as his men’s teams, sending teams to the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championship the last five years (2009-13) and producing at least one qualifier for the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships during that span.

In 2013, the Violets finished a best-ever sixth at the NCAA Cross Country Championship.

McDonough came to NYU after six years as an assistant coach at Seton Hall University. While there, he coached numerous Big East Conference champions, six IC4A champions, an American record-setting distance medley relay team in 1994, and six NCAA Division I All-Americans, including two in cross country.

Additionally, McDonough has varied experience as a race manager and director, working on races such as the NYC Gotham Cup, as well as serving as president of the New York Metropolitan Coaches Association since 2004.

A 1993 graduate of Syracuse University with a Bachelor of Science degree in political science, McDonough brought extensive professional and personal experience to the NYU program. As an athlete, he helped lead the Syracuse cross country program for four years and was named captain as a senior. On the track, he was a member of the Orange's 1992 Big East Championship team, anchoring the relay that clinched the meet.

As a high school runner at Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft, NJ, McDonough was part of a winning DMR at the Penn Relays and competed at the prestigious Fifth Avenue Mile in New York City. He continues to train and can usually be found running with the team.

A native of Point Pleasant, NJ, McDonough resides in Interlaken, NJ.
