Mike Smith is in his second year as an assistant coach with the New York University men's and women's track & field teams. His primary responsibilities include assisting the Violets' distance runners.

Smith’s first indoor track season at NYU was highlighted with a fourth-place finish by the men’s team at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships. Senior Zac Kish finished third in the 800m with a time of 1:55.19 and ran with teammates sophomore Budd Brown, sophomore Chevaun Samuels and freshman Malcolm Montilus on the Violets’ third-place 4x400m relay team.

The outdoor season was also a success, as two members of the men’s team qualified for the NCAA Championships. Brown competed in the 400m sprint while senior Johnny Lake represented NYU in the 3,000m steeplechase. The women’s season was highlighted by a second-place finish from junior Kristina Harris in the 100m sprint at the UAA Championships.

Smith came to NYU after a successful collegiate career at the University of Cincinnati. A 2005 graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature, he competed for the Bearcats’ track & field and cross country team for four seasons.

At Cincinnati he was named All-Conference USA in cross country as a sophomore, junior and senior, and All-Conference USA in the 10,000m as a junior and senior.

After graduating, Smith went on to earn a master’s degree in English literature from The George Washington University in 2008. He also has a master’s of philosophy in English literature (MPhil), which he obtained in 2015 from GWU.
Smith, who has also spent time as an adjunct professor at George Washington, has competed in multiple marathons.

A native of Fostoria, OH, Smith resides in Brooklyn, NY.
