The New York University wrestling team completed day one of the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships, hosted by The College of New Jersey, on Friday, February 27, in Ewing, N.J.
For this regional tournament, the top three wrestlers in each weight class will qualify for the NCAA Division III National Championships, set for March 12–14.
Ten wrestlers competed for the Violets, one in each weight class, as NYU stands in fourth place out of 21 teams following the opening day of competition.
Following Friday's action, four NYU wrestlers remain undefeated in the championship bracket: Alexander Diaz (125), Jacob Venezia (133), Ty Finn (174), and Justin Mayes (184). Diaz opened the tournament with a technical fall and followed with a major decision. Venezia earned a technical fall and a decision victory at 133 pounds. Finn recorded back-to-back technical fall victories to move through the bracket, while Mayes advanced with a fall, a technical fall, and a major decision at 184 pounds. Each will return to the mat on Saturday with a chance to secure a top-three finish and automatic qualification to nationals.
In addition, three other Violets remain alive in the consolation bracket with a path to a third-place finish: Nicky Bell (165), Mo Talebi (197), and Nathan Faxon (285). Each picked up wins on Friday and will need to win their remaining matches on Saturday to keep their NCAA qualification hopes alive.
The wrestlers return to the mat for day two of the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships on Saturday morning beginning at 10:00 a.m.
