Darren Rubin of the New York University men's basketball team has earned the national spotlight after his impressive weekend. The graduate student out of Dayton, OH was named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) Division III National Men's Player of the Week after having already been named a University Athletic Association (UAA) Athlete of the Week.
In a pair of ranked matchups on the road, Rubin averaged 22.5 points per game on 46.8% shooting from the field, leading the Violets to wins over #18 Washington University in St. Louis and #2 University of Chicago. He also added 4.0 rebounds, 6.0 assists, and 1.0 steals per contest.
The wins boosted NYU to #22 in the
national rankings, marking the first time this season that the Violets have broken into the top-25.
Rubin's weekend was highlighted by his game-winning three-point shot as time expired to beat WashU on Friday night, 77-76. He finished the game with a season-high 28 points, as well as six assists, four rebounds and two steals.
In NYU's 89-68 win over UChicago on Sunday afternoon, the graduate guard tallied 17 points, four rebounds, and a game-high six assists.
The Violets will next take the court this Friday, January 30, against Case Western Reserve University at the John A. Paulson Center.
