Darren Rubin's three-pointer at the buzzer capped a double-digit comeback and gave the New York University men's basketball team a 77-76 win over
#18-ranked Washington University in St. Louis on Friday, January 23, in St. Louis, MO.
Connor May's layup with 4.1 seconds left gave the Bears (11-4, 1-3) a 76-74 lead in the University Athletic Association (UAA) contest.
After a timeout, Rubin took the inbounds pass, drove towards the basket, stopped at the top of the key, pulled up, and nailed the game-winner for the Violets (11-4, 2-2).
"We work on that play in practice all the time. Just tried to get to my spot," Rubin explained. "When it left my hands I thought 'it might go in'…..and it did!"
WashU took a game-high 13-point lead, 37-24, in the first half before NYU responded with a 10-0 run capped by Rubin's layup with 1:41 left
The Bears went on to lead 40-36 at halftime, then scored the first seven points after the break for another double-digit lead.
Rubin's three-pointer snapped the streak.
The Violets pulled to within 61-60 on
Alex Daniels' 3-pointer with 7:07 remaining in the game.
The Bears opened up a seven point lead at 67-60 and still led 73-67 with just over a minute left.
But, the Violets ended the game on a 10-3 run, capped by Rubin's three-pointer. He finished with an NYU-career-high 28 points, while adding six assists, four rebounds and two steals.
Daniels scored 13 points, while
Luke Kolaja and
Andrew Waldman each had 11.
Quinn Clark grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
The Violets continue their two-game Midwest swing with a contest against #2 University of Chicago on Sunday. Tip-off is set for 2:00pm central time in the Windy City.
