Track Competes at Day One of the UAA Championships

Diaz Takes Third; Multiple Violets PR

The New York University men's and women's track & field teams competed in the first day of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships, held at Icahn Stadium on Randall's Island in Manhattan on Saturday, April 26.

In the men's 800-meter run, senior Jon Diaz took third overall with a time of 1:52.38, while Aleksander Jopek (1:56.40) and William Cornick (1:59.83) rounded out the Violet efforts.

Mubeen Zainul led the way in the men's 10,000-meter run, placing third overall with a time of 31:17.49. Shaurya Srivastava (31:54.41) and Jacob Christy (32:14.04) followed in ninth and 11th place, respectively.

In the 100-meter hurdles preliminary round, Dasha Jackson posted a personal best of 15.14 to advance to the women's final, while Travis Perry ran a personal-best 10.89 in the men's 100-meter prelims to qualify for finals. 

EJ Eaglin (11.45) and Lincoln Tutor (11.58) also competed in the 100m, with Eaglin setting a personal best.
 
In the 400-meter preliminaries, James Thompson clocked 51.04 to place 10th, while Tutor ran a personal-best 52.33 to finish 15th. 

On the women's side, Beverly Okyere set a personal best in the 400m prelims (1:00.75), and Cindy Leonard crossed in 1:11.56.

Gianna Dawson placed seventh in the women's 800-meter run with a time of 2:16.95. Rina Kurihara followed closely, running a personal-best 2:18.99 for ninth. 

Okyere posted another personal best in the 200 meters (26.38). Perry continued his strong meet, running a personal-best 22.41 in the men's 200-meter prelims, with Tutor (23.07) and Eaglin (23.10) also setting new personal marks.

Olivia Jackson added a personal best in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, finishing sixth overall in 11:19.20.

In field events, senior Michelle Uvieghara placed 11th in the women's shot put with a mark of 10.83m, while senior Daniel Lee took ninth in the men's shot put with a throw of 12.10m.

Both the men's and women's squads are in seventh place of seven teams following the conclusion of competition on day 1.

The Violets will continue competition on day two tomorrow at 8:30am.
