Met Basketball Writers Association Honors NYU Basketball Teams

Men's and Women's Players and Coaches Receive Accolades

Following the 2024-25 basketball season, six New York University basketball team members and both head coaches received honors from the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA).

The high volume of NYU honorees demonstrates the powerhouse that has become NYU Basketball. The women's team finished as NCAA Division III National Champions for a second consecutive season and extended its winning streak to 62 games, eighth-longest in NCAA women's basketball history across all three divisions, while the men's team made it to the National Championship Game and won a program-record 29 games.  

On the women's side, Natalie Bruns was named All-Met Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. Belle Pellecchia, received First Team honors and Caroline Pepper was named All-Met Second Team. 

On the men's team, Tristan How was named First Team, Zay Freeney earned Second Team, Brock Susko was named Third Team, and Hampton Sanders received Honorable Mention.

Women's Head Coach Meg Barber was selected Division III Coach of the Year for a second straight season, while Dave Klatsky earned the men's honor for the first time. 

Bruns receives MBWA Player of the Year honors for the second consecutive season. She also is a three-time University Athletic Association (UAA) Player of the Year and was selected Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division III Player of the Year this season. She also received the NCAA Elite 90 Award, given to the athlete with the highest GPA at the Final Four.

Bruns started all 31 games, set a program record with 98 blocks this season and finishes her career with 1,661 points (No. 6 all-time at NYU). 

Pellecchia started all 31 games and averaged an impressive 14.6 points per game while shooting 58.8 percent from the field. Pellecchia, #8 on NYU's all-time scoring list (1,508 points), led the team in steals (112) and was named UAA Defensive Player of the Year for an unprecedented fourth consecutive season. 

Pepper started all 31 games for the Violets and led the team in three-pointer (70). She was third in scoring (11.8 ppg) and received First Team All-UAA honors. 

How played a key role for the men's team, starting all 31 games. He earned National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) District IV Player of the Year, as well as NABC First Team All-America, D3hoops.com Region IV First Team,   D3hoops.com Second Team All-American, Final Four All-Tournament Team, and UAA Player of the Year. He led NYU in scoring (14.8 ppg) and rebounds (9.9 rpg). 

Freeney started all 31 games, leading NYU in steals (38) and receiving NABC District IV Second Team, D3hoops.com Region IV Third Team, and Second Team All-UAA honors. He is graduating with 1,364 career points, #7 on NYU's all-time list. 

Susko started 31 games for the Violets and led the team in three-pointers (64). He was named Second Team All-UAA and D3hoops.com Region IV Third Team.

A crucial bench piece for the team, Sanders averaged 11.6 points per game and earned Second Team All-UAA honors. Following his outstanding performances in both the National Semi-Final and Championship games, Sanders was chosen for the Final Four All-Tournament Team.

Barber has posted a 150-21 (.877) record at NYU, and has led the team to 62 consecutive wins. Barber has received countless awards for her work, including NCAA Division III Coach of the Year and UAA Coach of the Year.  

 Klatsky, led the team to a 29-2 record and its first-ever outright UAA Championship. He has a 68-16 record at NYU, leading the Violets to consecutive three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. He was named NABC District IV Coach of the Year and UAA Coach of the Year. 

The 2024-25 All-Met teams will be honored at the 92nd MBWA Haggerty Awards dinner on Thursday, April 24, at the Sleepy Hollow Hotel & Conference Center in Tarrytown, NY. The Haggerty dinner is the longest-running, media-managed college basketball awards program in the United States.
