The New York University men's tennis team traveled upstate on Sunday, March 23, to take on Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY. The Violets downed the Thoroughbreds, 4-2, for the program's first win over Skidmore since 2014, following five consecutive losses.
The victory marks seven straight for the Violets with just over one month until the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship.
"The team is figuring out how to win," said Assistant Coach Campbell Stone. "We are as talented as anyone, but understanding the mindset of winning as a team and the fight it takes to battle through tough points, days and matches is coming to us."
NYU's #1 doubles Philip Martin and Boren Zheng were the lone successful pair for the Violets in doubles play. They defeated Skidmore's Yuval Goodman and Griffin Beirnat, 4-2.
Skidmore recorded wins in the #2 and #3 doubles matches to score the team point.
NYU's Bryan Hui scored the Violets first point in #4 singles, dispatching Skidmore's Nika Mori, 6-2, 6-4.
Zheng won his second match of the day in the #1 singles slot, defeating Goodman, 6-2, 6-4. His singles win gave NYU a 2-1 lead.
The Thoroughbreds tied the match with a #6 singles win.
Martin put NYU back in front with his #2 singles win, defeating Biernat, 7-6, 6-1.
Louis Frowein secured the match-winning point in #5 singles competition, battling Skidmore's Kyle Lundberg to a 6-7, 7-6, 6-0 win.
The Violets return to action on Sunday, March 30, with a home match against Ithaca College at Stadium Tennis Center in the Bronx.
