On Tuesday, March 18, the
#1 New York University Violets swept the Kean University Cougars. The match began at 7pm in Union, NJ.
The Violets (20-0, 4-0) beat the Cougars (11-9, 2-2) in straight sets, 25-17, 25-19, 25-14.
The teams alternated points in the first, making it a close set. At 14, the Violets established a lead with six consecutive points, bringing the score to 20-14. They won the set much to the credit of
Devyn Nguyen who distributed the ball across all three hitters, making it hard for the Cougar squad to defend.
The second set saw NYU break away at 10-10. They scored five consecutive points, protecting their serve and taking advantage of momentum. They won the set, putting them one set away from victory.
The Violets made quick work of the final set, establishing a lead after 4-4. NYU pulled ahead with two consecutive blocks led by
Buddy Cohen. At 8-4, the Cougars called a timeout but the Violets came out of the break with a kill from Cohen.
Krish Vasan was crucial behind the service line, allowing the Violets to go on a run and secure their 20th straight win.
Lucas Osiecki led NYU in kills with 11, and
Emerson Evans and
Luke Boyer followed with eight. Nguyen ran his offense efficiently recording 31 assists.
Defensively, Boyer led digs recording nine, while
Zach Knudsen and Nguyen posted seven. Cohen was essential at the net with an impressive eight blocks from the middle, Evans had four.
The Violets return to the court on Saturday, March, 22, in Rochester, NY. They will play
#12 St.John Fisher University at 1pm.
