Sophomore sensation
Julian Aske of the New York University men's track & field team broke his own 800m record and senior All-American
Ryan Tobin established a new mark in the 5000m as several Violets competed in the David Hemery Valentine Invitational at Boston College in Boston, MA, on Friday, February 14.
Aske originally set the 800m record at Columbia University's Dr. Sander Scorcher on January 24 at the Armory in Manhattan when he posted a time of 1:50.85. That broke the old program record of 1:51.90 set by NYU Hall of Famer Byron Dyce in 1967.
"We are really proud of Julian's development, hard work and dedication to the team and to the sport," said Head Coach Tyler Deck Shipley. "It is great to see him begin to reap the rewards of these efforts. I know he is very excited for what is to come."
On Friday, Aske set another new standard by finishing in 1:49.52, the second-fastest in NCAA Division III this season. He won his heat, finished 22nd overall in a field of 232 runners, and was #1 among DIII participants.
"I kind of time-trialed it," Aske said. "I think I could have done even better it there had been closer competition in my heat."
Not to be outdone, Tobin left his own imprint on the day's proceedings by establishing a new program record in the 5000m. His time of 14:06.77 obliterated the old mark of 14:21.87, set back in 2008 by NYU Hall of Famer Hany Abdallah.
Evan Sherman (14:46.44) also competed in the 5000m for the Violets, while
Alex Hrycysyzn posted a time of 4:16.25 in the mile.
A larger group of team members will be back in action tomorrow as the Violets host the NYU DIII Invitational at the Track and Field Center at The Armory beginning at 9:00am.
