A season-high five New York University student-athletes have earned University Athletic Association (UAA) Athlete of the Week honors in their respective sports following their outstanding performances over the weekend.
Ashlyn Pallotta (women's cross country),
Theodore Udelson-Nee (men's cross country),
Kaley McIntyre (women's swimming),
Terra Nagai (men's soccer), and
Jacob Venezia (wrestling) were all recognized for their achievements.
It was Championship Saturday for the NYU cross country teams as Pallotta and Udelson-Nee captured individual titles at the UAA Cross Country Championships in Edwardville, IL, with the Violets bringing home both team titles as well.
Pallotta out-distanced all of her competitors over the 6k course with a time of 21:00.8. She finished seven seconds ahead of runner-up Chloe Bronson of Carnegie Mellon University in the 78-runner competition and became only the second NYU runner to win the UAA title (current Assistant Coach
Grace Richardson was the first in 2023).
Udelson-Nee took the men's title with a time of 24:49.6 over the 8k course. He edged Carnegie Mellon's Ryan Podnar at the wire, winning by just .3 seconds in the 77-man field. Udelson-Nee became the first Violet to win the UAA individual title since Zach Maher in 2009.
McIntyre, NYU's two-time NCAA Swimmer of the Year, won three individual events and was a member of a winning relay as NYU faced NCAA Division I Columbia University on Friday. The Violets' 10-time National Champion captured the 200 freestyle (1:50.69), the 50 freestyle (23.42) and the 100 freestyle (50.80), while also leading off the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:34.68).
Nagai scored the game's only goal as NYU's men's soccer team defeated #2 nationally-ranked Washington University in St. Louis 1-0 on the road on Saturday. His tally came in the 20th minute off a pass from teammate
Keyon Namdar. Nagai now leads NYU with six goals and 15 points this season, and the Violets have won two of their last three UAA contests.
Venezia finished first in the 133-pound weight class as the Violets opened their season Saturday at the Ned McGinley Invitational in Wilkes-Barre, PA. After a first-round bye, he won five straight matches, three by fall and one by technical fall, before defeating Rocco Futia of SUNY Cortland by a 14-10 decision in the final. An NCAA Qualifier last season, this was Venezia's second consecutive Ned McGinley title and helped lead the Violets to a first-place finish in the 12-team competition.
Quite a weekend, indeed!
