NYU Basketball Collects Numerous All-Met Awards

Bruns, Barber, Morrison, Pellecchia, Bauman (WBB); Freedman, Freeney, Savarino (MBB) Honored

Natalie Bruns of New York University's national champion women's basketball team was named All-Met Division III Women's Basketball Player of the Year and to the All-Met First Team while head coach Meg Barber received Division III Women's Coach of the Year honors from the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA).

Joining Bruns on the All-Met Division III Women's First Team are Morgan Morrison and Belle Pellecchia, with Megan Bauman landing on the Second Team.

Representing NYU men's basketball are Spencer Freedman on the All-Met First Team while Michael Savarino and Zay Freeney received All-Met Third Team honors.

Bruns adds these accolades to her long list of honors after starring for the Violets' national title winning squad, as she was also named National Player of the Year and All-America by both the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and D3hoops.com, University Athletic Association (UAA) Player of the Year and First Team All-UAA, and NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player.

Bruns set NYU's single-season blocks record with 98 in 2023-24 and is now the program's all-time leading shot blocker (237) while her 3.2 blocks per game ranked ninth in Division III this past year. She averaged 14.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.3 steals per game in addition to the 3.2 blocks and became the 18th 1,000-point scorer in NYU history, closing with 1,128 points.

Barber (NYU class of 2002), has posted a 119-21 (.850) head coaching record at her alma mater, including a perfect 31-0 mark while winning the national title and third straight UAA title this year. The 31-game winning streak is a program record, as is the 2,459 points the Violets scored in 2023-24. Under Barber's guidance this season, NYU ranked #1 in NCAA Division III in field goal percentage (49.0), #3 in three-point percentage (37.1), #4 in scoring margin (+26.1), and #6 in both blocks (6.2) and assists (18.5) per game. She and her assistants were named UAA Coaching Staff of the Year, while Barber was a also a finalist for WBCA National Coach of the Year. 

Pellecchia had an outstanding season as well, becoming the first player ever to win three straight UAA Defensive Player of the Year awards. She also received First Team All-UAA, Region 4 First Team, D3hoops.com All-America and WBCA Honorable Mention All-America. Pellecchia did a little bit of everything for the Violets, averaging 10.8 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 2.0 steals per game while also surpassing the 1,000-point mark (1,054 and counting).

Morrison adds All-Met First Team to her All-America honors from the WBCA and D3hoops.com, First Team All-UAA and First Team Region 4 recognition. The graduate student made an instant impact in her first year at NYU, averaging 14.3 points, 7.2 boards and 1.0 blocks per game on 59.3 percent shooting from the floor.

Bauman also contributed greatly after transferring to NYU prior to this past season, being named First Team All-UAA and First Team Region 4. The point guard delivered 7.9 points and  a team-high 4.4 assists while securing 3.7 rebounds per game. 

On the men's side, Freedman shined for the Violets as they were crowned UAA Co-Champions for their first Association title in 30 years. The Violets' graduate student was the UAA Player of the Year and First Team All-UAA, D3hoops.com National and Region 4 Player of the Year, First Team All-America and First Team Region 4. He averaged an impressive 18.4 points, 5.8 assists, 4.1 rebounds, and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 49.3 percent from the floor, 41.6 percent from deep and 84.8 percent at the foul line.

Freeney and Savarino were also both Second Team All-UAA honorees as important starters on the Violets' UAA-winning team. Freeney averaged 14.8 points, 3.4 boards, 2.1 assists, and 1.5 steals while Savarino contributed 12.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game in 2023-24.

The 2023-24 All-Met teams will be honored at the 91st MBWA Haggerty Awards dinner on Thursday, April 18, at the Sleepy Hollow Hotel & Conference Center in Tarrytown, NY.
