New York University's baseball team began its University Athletic Association (UAA) schedule on Friday, March 29, at Washington University in St. Louis. The Bears won the first of four this weekend between the two teams 9-7.
Most of the scoring occurred early on as WashU produced six runs over the first two innings and led 6-0 entering the third.
NYU responded with four runs in the top of the third as
Nick Argenziano and
Nate Pallotta got things started with RBI singles. Then,
Richard Beggy hit a two-run double to left center which brought the Violets back within two (6-4).
It was still 6-4 four going into the bottom of the fourth, but the Bears rattled off three more runs to give them a five-run lead. These ended up being the hosts' final runs of the game as WashU withstood NYU's rally.
The Violets got two back in the sixth thanks to RBI doubles from both
Dakota Barbet and
Harrison Blueweiss. Innings seven and eight were scoreless and NYU rallied in the top of the ninth, but Pallotta's RBI single accounted for the lone run of the frame.
Barbet (2-for-4, two doubles), Beggy (2-for-5, two RBIs, double), Pallotta (2-for-5, two RBIs, one run) and Argenziano (2-for-5, two runs, RBI, double) all had strong days at the plate.
After WashU's high-scoring early innings,
Joseph Argenziano stepped on the mound for NYU and tossed four shutout innings while allowing just one hit and one walk with three strikeouts.
The two teams continue their UAA series with a doubleheader tomorrow, March 30, with game one beginning at 12:00pm (central) in St. Louis.
