The New York University men's fencing team, the 9th-ranked squad in all of the NCAA, traveled across the bridge to Brooklyn, NY, on February 25 to close their regular season competing in the LIU Shark Showdown.
The Violets went head-to-head against four teams on Saturday. In chronological order, their opponents were 29th-ranked Lafayette College, 33rd-ranked Hunter College, 27th-ranked Wagner College, and finally the hosts, LIU.
NYU went undefeated on the day. The first match against Lafayette saw NYU take their first win. The Violets' opponent took the foil competition by a score of 6-3, but the NYU saber and epee teams climbed to dominant 9-0 and 8-1 respective victories. Will Margulies, Vincent Hong, Matthew Zhou, Oliver Hu, Adam Wong and Bryce McClain propelled the Violets to a 20-7 victory.
The Violets then took on Hunter College. This time, all NYU teams did not drop a single bout. The Violets took a convincing 27-0 win over the Hawks.
Against Wagner, NYU won all three weapons once again. The Violets posted a 5-4 win in saber, 9-0 win in foil, and an 8-1 mark in epee.
When NYU faced LIU for the last match of the day, it was the same story as the rest. The Violets ended the showdown a perfect 4-0 with a 19-8 win over LIU.
"Thrilled that we closed out the season with an undefeated record at LIU today," said Head Coach Ben Bratton. "This is exactly how you want to perform as we approach the NCAA Regional Championships."
The Violets end their regular season with a 20-10 record.
NYU will return to action when they participate in the NCAA Regional Championships in Brooklyn, NY, on March 10 at 7:00am back at LIU.
